Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

Humans have been using the power of scent for over 6000 years. Fragrant herbs and oils were used by Neolithic peoples and the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Babylon. In ancient Egypt, legend has it that Cleopatra herself had the sails of her ship soaked in jasmine to attract Mark Antony. Attracting, alluring, relaxing, comforting, healing -- modern aromatherapy also uses the powerful properties of essential oils to balance and enhance your mood.

Unlike synthetic fragrances, pure essential oils are natural compounds derived from plants; their biochemical composition stimulates our brains, affecting mood and well being. Aromatherapy can be used to recharge, rejuvenate, relax and soothe.

We are now introducing essential oils from Traditional Sources - Wellness & Healing Ž. These are extraordinary and unusual single oils and oil blends of the highest quality.

Because essential oils are highly concentrated, they need to be used with care. Apply them by the drop. The general rules are to add them to your bath or to dilute them in carrier oils, such as sweet almond, apricot, jojoba, sesame, olive, grapeseed, or hempseed oil, before using topically. They can also be diffused in the air. Select essential oils with similar properties and blend together to create your own unique aromas. Sheepish has carrier oils in 4-16 fluid ounce plastic bottles. Gallon sizes are available as a special order (less than 1 week). Please email or call us for prices. To use these oils in your home you have choices:

passive diffusion (cotton ball with oil on it) this works nicely for oils like peppermint.

active diffusion -- machines at about $50 that atomize the oils (and don't burn them). These are great for large areas. There are also cheap versions that use a dampened pad. These work for small areas. ($20)

"burners" -- here there are again two choices. Those that have a heated shell that use pure oil (about $20). The other choice is a burner heated by a tea candle. In the reservoir above the candle is water with a few 5-8 drops of oil. As the water is heated the oil evaporates. ($10-$20)
